unknown - Devotional Picture- The Pentitent Magdalene - ca. 1750 - T-Shirt

A hand-painted devotional sheet from the mid-eighteenth century shows a seated penitent woman in red and blue, resting on a rock beside a skull and an open book, with a bouquet of tulip, rose and blue flowers below her.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built in vertical layers. At the top centre, a barefoot woman sits on a scalloped, shell-like pedestal, wearing a red mantle over a blue gown, her hands clasped in her lap and her head turned gently to one side. Above her, a soft grey cloud carries two small cherub heads with red-tipped wings, framed by a faint yellow glow. Below, a green stem tied with a pink ribbon rises around an empty cartouche and opens into a red rose, a yellow tulip and a blue star-shaped flower. The palette rests on warm paper cream, with rose red, royal blue and sea green carrying the figures.

Meaning & Symbolism

The skull, the open book and the bare-branched tree on the rocky mound are conventional signs of a repentant life withdrawn from worldly pleasure. The clasped hands and bowed head express humility and meditation. The cherubs and the rays above point to the grace and heavenly reward that follow repentance. The rose and tulip carry a second layer of devotion: beauty set against the passing of earthly things, and the enduring hope of salvation. Sheets like this were made around 1750 for private prayer and for distribution among the faithful, combining a sacred figure with flowers and a cartouche for a name or dedication.

Wearing the Penitence

Printed across the chest of a tee, the composition keeps its devotional logic. The saint sits at the centre of the front, the cherubs and glow rise toward the collar, and the bouquet settles lower on the shirt, so the figure and the flowers read in the same order they do on the original sheet. The cream paper tone of the artwork becomes the ground the wearer carries through the day.
