Elihu Vedder, American, 1836 – 1923 - details of figure studies - ca. 1885 v1 - T-Shirt

Elihu Vedder's study sheet presents a woman's head, a foot, a raised leg and an arm as separate fragments, each drawn for its own form.

Visual Elements & Composition

Black and white chalk sits on a mid-grey paper ground that fills most of the sheet. At the upper centre, a female head turns three-quarters to the left, eyes lowered, with hair drawn in a loose mass above the brow. White chalk highlights model the shoulder and upper chest against dark accents at the neck and collarbone. A forearm and hand reach toward the lower left edge, a bare foot with curled toes sits apart at lower centre, and a bent leg, cut off by the top of the sheet, rises along the right side. The deckled lower edge frames the arrangement.

Meaning & Symbolism

The sheet presents the body as a set of parts rather than one continuous figure. The head is the most finished element, and its withdrawn gaze gives the whole sheet a reflective, studious mood. The isolated foot, hand and leg show Vedder testing individual anatomical forms and how they turn under light, building a pose from carefully observed fragments. Vedder (1836–1923) was an American painter who lived largely in Rome, producing imaginative figure subjects and illustrations. Combined studies of the head, limbs and extremities were a routine part of the academic studio method in the later nineteenth century, and this sheet records that working process.

On the Unisex Heavy Cotton Tee

Fragments suit a garment because a tee is read as one shape across the chest and sleeves. Here the head sits at the centre of the upper body, with the foot, hand and leg arranged around it, so the drawing's scattered parts gather into a single composition when worn. The grey ground and black-and-white chalk carry onto the front, where the study's quiet, inward mood stays visible at conversational distance.
